I'm having a go at my first report template
- a bit of a 'partial success'...
everything is fine but a mysterious "" gets added right at the beginning which mucks up my xsl look.

can you tell me how to get rid of it?

thanks

This is known as the byte-order mark and is OK to leave in.

I don't think it's Awasu that's putting it into your output file so check your template file. If you used some kind of XML editor, it may well have put the BOM into the template file in which case, it will just get carried over to the output file.

I'm also getting some bizarre characters like:
–
€™
â"
where speech marks and apostrophes should be.

Would you mind having a quick look at my template? I am a beginner so it's not obvious to me where I've cocked up. (I typed it up in Notepad).

thanks!

Make sure you are using "real" double and single quotes. Microsoft are infamous for the problems they've caused by introducing their so-called "smart quotes"

Post it here and I, or someone else, can take a look at it.

What are real quotes?
I don't think I've even used quotes...
Is that something to do with language and keyboard options?

Here's my template

Check out some of these links about smart quotes: http://www.google.co.th/search?q=microsoft+smart+quotes

It doesn't matter if you yourself have never used them, the content Awasu is using when it processes your report has probably got them in it. They tend to get into the system (and gum everything up ) when people copy and paste stuff from Web pages or Word documents that have them in it.

You might want to try adding the following to the top of your template (but use angle brackets instead of square ones):

Code: Select all

[?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?]

If you look at all the Awasu templates that output XML, you'll see that they have this to declare what encoding is being used in the file.
