I have been receiving feeds from here for a number of months with no problems. Then suddenly two days ago, I noticed I was getting a "can't read the url" error. When I open a browser session in IE6 and enter that URL, nothing comes up. However, when I do the same thing in Firefox, I get a page display. Is this a problem with Awasu or with the website providing the feed? Thanks in advance.

<strike>We just changed the feed service for the forums but the old feed URL's should've been automatically updated to the new ones.

Only seeing something in Firefox but not IE is odd - can you post your feed URL's here.</strike>

Sorry, I didn't realize your "here" was a link; I thought you meant *here* :-)

The feed is showing up OK in both IE and Firefox for me...

They all seem to be working fine for me (I saw your post asking this same question over there :-)) "Can't read the URL" is often a temporary error so things might start working shortly.

What version of Awasu are you running?

Am I out of luck on this problem?

And a sort-of related question: Since I am on Advanced Edition 2.1, can I upgrade to 2.2? If so, how do I enter my registration key? I'm asking this because I was reading some stuff in the forums about using Mozilla for my browser and got the bright idea that maybe upgrading to 2.2 might help. I did that, but now I find I have no way to enter my registration key I got for 2.1. I don't want to pay for this software twice!

Edit: I un-installed 2.2 and went back to 2.1. But I still would like to know why the feeds for this site don't work in either Mozilla or IE. Hope you can help.

I was kinda hoping it would resolve itself. As I said earlier, this error is often a temporary thing. The fact that opening the feed in an external IE window suggests that the problem is not with Awasu but lies elsewhere.

vinyl-junkie wrote:Since I am on Advanced Edition 2.1, can I upgrade to 2.2? If so, how do I enter my registration key?

You shouldn't need to. You just upgrade and your old license key will still be there and continue to work.

vinyl-junkie wrote:I don't want to pay for this software twice!

You don't have to, it will continue to work forever. If you want to get the latest and greatest versions as they come out, that requires a payment that lets you get them for a period of 12 months.

vinyl-junkie wrote:I un-installed 2.2 and went back to 2.1.

OK, this is risky. Part of going from 2.1 to 2.2 is upgrading your installation but there's no corresponding "downgrading" step when you go backwards. I'm assuming you blew away all your channels and settings when you un-installed because it shouldn't have worked otherwise... :-)

So the real bottom line is that if I want to upgrade after I've had Awasu for more than 12 months (which I have), I will have to pay again. :( I thought perhaps if I upgraded, the problem would go away.

BTW, I un-installed 2.2 and re-installed 2.1, and did not lose my channels in the process, but the feeds from that one site still do not work.

Let me ask a related question then, as a possible solution. I went through the process to change the embedded browser to Mozilla, but it tells me I need to register an ActiveX control. I read your FAQ on embedded browsers and also a few relevant posts in the forum, but I still don't understand how to do that.

I went to the page that you reference in your FAQ (http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/control.htm#download) but I don't know exactly what I'm supposed to do. I downloaded and ran the zip file in the first link there (Mozilla ActiveX Control 1.7.12). This created a folder called: C:\Program Files\Mozilla ActiveX Control v1.7.12

Later on in that web page it has the following, which I assume means installing the ActiveX control:

Installing it
Installation should be a straightforward procedure:

Install or build mozilla
Open a DOS prompt, change to your Mozilla bin directory (e.g. "cd c:\mozilla\bin")
Type "regsvr32 mozctlx.dll"

I have no bin folder like this, so exactly how do I install this ActiveX control?

More importantly, if installing this ActiveX control doesn't cure my problem with these feeds, where do I go from here?

Your 12 months has only just expired but we're happy to let you have the latest version without having to renew. Although it sounds like you've already got it...?

vinyl-junkie wrote:BTW, I un-installed 2.2 and re-installed 2.1, and did not lose my channels in the process, but the feeds from that one site still do not work.

It's possible that going back to 2.1 has caused these problems (although unlikely, given that your other channels are working).

vinyl-junkie wrote:I have no bin folder like this, so exactly how do I install this ActiveX control?

CD to wherever you installed it, in your case, <tt>C:\Program Files\Mozilla ActiveX Control v1.7.12</tt>

I think the real question is why IE doesn't show anything when you try to open the feed URL in a separate browser window. What do you get when you right-click on the window and choose <i>View source</i>?

Code: Select all

Sorry, I probably didn't explain myself very well. In an attempt to solve the original problem, I upgraded Awasu to 2.2, but it gave me a 30-day trial. It didn't preserve my original registration key, and apparently there was no way to enter that in 2.2. I then went through Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and un-installed 2.2, then re-installed 2.1. Now I'm back to where I was originally. No channels lost, but this one group of channels won't update, which is what I reported in my original post.

When I try to display the feed in my Internet Explorer browser session, the feed will not display. However, when I try to display it in a Firefox browser session, the feed displays.

Here is the complete error message from one of those feeds:

17may06 17:40:40 CodingForums.com - MySQL error: Can't update the feed.
- Can't read the URL: http://www.codingforums.com/external.ph ... forumids=7

I also forgot to add that I got the ActiveX control to register, yet Awasu still thinks it isn't registered. And - those RSS feeds still won't update.

Sorry, I forgot to answer this question.

Well, first of all, I can't bring up the page at all in IE. When I do it in Firefox, here is the results of View Source for one of the feeds:

Code: Select all

You've downloaded and installed the *trial* version and yes, there's no way to enter a license key. If you go to the 2.2.1 release page, there are special links for Advanced and Pro Edition users where they can enter their registration details and be told how to get the latest version.

This output is completely borked. The first line should be the <tt>HTTP/1.1 200 OK</tt>, the last the <tt></rss></tt>.

I don't know what's causing it but it's not Awasu. I would try contacting the publisher and/or your ISP. It certainly explains why Awasu is not able to parse the feed.

I contacted the publisher, but their response was basically that since the feed validates, they're not going to fix it. They told me to go get another reader that can handle the feed. :x
