Awasu » How (not) to grow a technology

An interesting article over at xml.com about how RSS is developing, especially in light of recent efforts by Sam Ruby and others to come up with Yet Another RSS Format.

As the developer of one of the more popular RSS readers, I probably should get involved in the discussion but that is one quagmire I really don't want to enter 🙂

Brent Simmons sums up my feelings on the matter pretty well. In a nutshell, if and when this new format is standardized and people want to use it, Awasu will support it.

Blogging is about communication and social networks. I'd like to see a bit more of that and a little less of the vitriol 🙂

Echo is not yet another RSS format. It's a format for syndicating content much like RSS, but it doesn't aim to be an RSS format and will likely bear a very different structure.

Fair enough but I think this is just playing with words. User's don't care about such distinctions, they just want something to read their news with. And ultimately, that's what it is all about: coming up with something that we can use.

If it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck then it's probably a duck 🙂 Even if we techies know that Echo != RSS, how do we explain it to our users?

Us: You know this thing called RSS that I keep telling you about and you've been using to read your news the past few years?
Them: Yes.
Us: Well, we've got a new thing called Echo that lets you do exactly the same thing as RSS
Them: Uh, OK.
Us: But it's *not* RSS.
Them: Uh, right...

Tough sell 🙂

Have your say
